GWYNNE Morgan made it a year to remember when he won the Ross-on-Wye Senior Champ-ionship, having previously taken the Herefordshire Senior title earlier this year at Wormsley.

Six-handicapper Morgan carded a splendid gross 75 for a two-shot winning margin over club senior captain John Hebdon, with former long serving secretary George Cason defying his octogenarian status with an age-matching 80 and taking third place.

Another senior golfer enjoying a good year is Peter Lowe who has played impressive golf to reach the final of two club singles competitions, namely the Harold Bradley and Trevor Lane Cups.

n Kington A team will be seeking their second Shropshire and Herefordshire Scratch League title in three years when they take on Hawkstone Park in the final this Saturday at Mile End.

Two years ago they caused a major upset in the final at Bridgnorth when they came from 3-1 down after the four morning singles matches to win all four afternoon matches and snatch the trophy from strong favourites Shifnal.

Twin counties junior star Matt Davies has been in outstanding form recently and won both his away and home matches in the 4-3 semi-final win over Hill Valley. Darren Richards claimed the other victory as Kington fought hard for an invaluable 2-2 half in the first leg at Hill Valley.

In the return leg at Bradnor Hill, Alan Williams and Davies won their matches, with Richards weighing in with the vital half that earned them a place in this weekend's final.

Club captains Ken Lewis and Angela Wilkes received great support from their members in a shotgun Texas Scramble that raised over £700 for their joint charity appeal.

Low-handicappers Darren Richards, Dan Jarman, Alan Williams and Matt Weaver were in their element in this format and carded a gross 56 to take the top prize with a nett 55.1.

The Scott family took the 'family team' prize with Priscilla, Ian, Nigel and Richard carding 65-8.8-56.2, and the lady captain, with help from Enid Crowe, Jackie Tunley and Joan Morgan collected the ladies' prize with 79-10.6-68.4.

Nearest-the-pin prizes were collected by Carol Blackburn, Nick Crum, Peter Burgoyne, David Baxendale and Andy Gealy, with the longest drive prizes going to Barbara Radbourne, Darren Richards and John Priday.

Kington gained a welcome win in the rearranged annual Challenge Trophy against neighbours Hereford with a convincing 660-623 points success in the aggregate team stableford event at Bradnor Hill.

After winning the last three matches in this fixture which dates back to the late 1960s, the visitors could not match the high scoring produced by the home pairings, with Stan Arnold and Malcolm Williams carding a staggering 49 points. They were backed up by Dave Hamer and Mike Waygood with 47, and brothers George and Geoff Smith on 46.

The best performance from Hereford came from Dave Boswell and Paul Roberts with 43 points, with four other pairs, Brian Maggs and Tony Dalley, John Lewthwaite and Mark Bloxham, Neil Bell and Willie Weaver, and Tom McGorran and Ron East, all weighing in with 42.

The senior team has taken full advantage of the fast running fairways to claim splendid 5-2 victories over Builth Wells, at home, and The Worcestershire Club at Malvern.

n Robin Eckley produced two splendid rounds to lift the Herefordshire GC Championship and win the Page Cup.

After establishing a clear lead over the rest of the field with a sparkling first round of 69, he followed up with a 72 for a winning gross aggregate score of 141.

Chris Gregory won the Sparkes Cup, a handicap event run in conjunction with the club championship, with a fine nett total of 126.

Clive James left the rest of the field trailing in his wake when he fired a superb nett 60 to win the senior section's David Elson Trophy.

n Andy Manns was the overall winner of Leominster's Data Logic Trophy, a running stableford over the three days of the Bank Holiday, with 110 points. Gary Lewis took the two-day award with 85 points, and Martin Pearson the one-day award with 46, the best score of the weekend.

n The Burghill Valley Junior Open produced some superb golf with three of the county's most promising youngsters battling it out over an extra four holes to decide the winner.

After the scheduled 18 holes, Kris Jones (Burghill), Matt Davies (Kington) and Ryan Davies (Belmont) were tied after firing excellent gross scores of 70.

In the play-off, Jones, who had already triumphed in two play-offs earlier in the season, kept a cool head to card two-under par, pipping his twin counties junior colleague Davies by a shot. The game Davies trailed in a further five shots adrift, but had the consolation of taking the handicap prize.
