MEMORIES will be flashing back to the wartime years of 1939 to 1945 at a local ploughing match being held later this month.

All day on Sunday, September 18, the atmosphere of wartime agriculture will be celebrated in a big way at the same time as Llangattock Ploughing Society hold their annual match at Blue Door Farm, Dingestow, near Monmouth, just off the eastbound A40 services.

The wartime atmosphere will be created with Land Army girls ploughing, horses working, a threshing machine in action, potatoes being planted and harvested the way they used to be, the sound of air raid sirens, and members of the Home Guard being called into action against enemy parachutists.

The highlight of the 'plough for victory' day, weather permitting, will be the sighting of an enemy aircraft.

The contribution of country folk to the war effort was considerable and on show will be memorabilia of the period covering kitchen equipment, hand tools and photographs.

To help complete the picture, popular breeds of livestock during the war will be on show, many of which are now classified as rare breeds and are seeing something of a resurgence in popularity.

The society is interested to hear from anyone willing to loan items for the display - anything that has a connection with the era. Anecdotes and stories from the wartime would also be of interest.

The society's secretary can be contacted on 01291 690292.
