A REMARKABLE violinist who has led a string quartet for more than half a century will return to Hereford to perform a concert in memory of a former friend and colleague.

Patrick Halling, who founded the Quartet Pro Musica in 1955, will lead its current members at the Bishop’s Palace on Sunday in aid of the Gwynne Edwards Memorial Trust.

Edwards, a former professor of viola and chamber music at the Royal Academy of Music and principal of the London Symphony Orchestra, was one of the leading classical musicians of his era, and played with Halling in the quartet for two decades. The professor lived and taught music in Herefordshire for the last 20 years of his life.

The Quartet Pro Musica will perform an all-English programme of Purcell, Delius and Elgar and returns to Bishop’s Palace after an acclaimed concert three years ago which marked the centenary of Edwards’ birth.

The trust supports promising string players through sponsoring awards at Hereford Cathedral School, the Welsh National Youth Orchestra and at an international viola competition.

Tickets cost £20 and include a buffet lunch. They are available on the door or from Ruth Edwards on 01568 613053.
