PRIMARY SCHOOL - On March 2, children from Garway Primary School celebrated their annual school Eisteddfod. Pupils from both KS1 and KS2 participated in both performance and creative activities to celebrate the artistic, written and musical culture of the school.

Classes this year were inspired by the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Keith Crawford, executive head teacher at Garway, commented on his first experience of the Garway Eisteddfod, “It was wonderful watching and helping to judge all of the participants who clearly put a huge amount of effort into their performance or presentation.

Well done to all the children who took part.”

On March 14, year 6 pupils volunteered their services at the village Lenten lunch. As well as making bread rolls, they helped serve and wait on tables and dressed up especially for the occasion.

A short special celebration was held on March 16, in school when the children hosted a Mother’s Day event to show how much the special women in their lives are appreciated.

The 14 Silver Birch trees grown from seed have grown into strong saplings and the children are looking forward to being involved with the community jubilee celebrations: they would like to plant their trees somewhere on the common.

March has also seen the launch of a brand new club at school: Film Club. Run by parents, the club operates every other Friday from 3.15pm-5.15pm in the mobile classroom in the school grounds. Film Club aims to make a wide range of films available to young people, which challenge, unite, educate, amaze and inspire.

The eco committee has been busy implementing its energy saving action plan. This was drawn up by the children as a result of their involvement in the carbon trust’s collaborative low carbon schools service – as a pilot school. Following a survey of energy use in school, pupils looked at different ways of reducing energy usage and costs in order to protect them against rising energy prices and reduce carbon emissions in the process.

They are in the process of producing a leaflet about saving energy which they hope will be of help to parents and members of the local community. As of March 12, the school’s systems of renewable energy have generated 17,272.06 kWh. Their action plan can be viewed on the school website: www.garwayprimaryschool.co.uk under the clubs section. Also, under useful links, it is possible to view both wind turbine and solar panel generation data. Just click on the link: energy generation to pv panels and wind turbine.
