HEREFORD Gilbert and Sullivan Operatic Society has started rehearsals for its spring production of Johann Strauss's operetta, Die Fledermaus and wants new members to swell the ranks.

"As next year will be our 60th anniversary, we are planning to make this a particularly memorable production," said society chairman Peter Rowberry. "Die Fledermaus is arguably the finest of the younger Strauss's 16 operettas. It has laughter, practical jokes, mistaken identities and delicious revenge, as well as one of the repertoire's most famous overtures and some wonderful duets and choruses."

New chorus singers, both men and women, wishing to join the society are given a very friendly welcome and plenty of support in learning a new work. There are also good principal parts in the operetta, five men and four women (including one cross-dressing!).

Auditions for the principal roles will be on October 29.

Sight-reading is not essential but new members are asked to perform an audition piece of their own choosing. The society rehearses at Breinton village hall on Tuesday evenings.

Anyone interested in joining the society should contact the secretary, Wendy Winterburn, on 01432 353728 or email w_winterburn @hotmail.com Hereford Gilbert & Sullivan Operatic Society will perform Die Fledermaus at the Courtyard in Hereford from March 20-24, 2007.
