FIFTEEN pairs of magnificently turned-out heavy horses, top vintage tractor ploughmen and the country's premier ploughmen will compete at the British National Ploughing Championships, when the event visits Surrey,at Loseley Park, near Guildford, on Saturday and Sunday, October 14 and 15, promising a great day out for the family.
With 200 contestants over the two days, the two top prizes include a trip to Lithuania to represent England in the 2007 World Ploughing Contest. In the main tractor ploughing classes, entrants include the top ploughmen in the world, the present World Reversible Ploughing Champion, Simon Witty from North Yorkshire and the present European Vintage Ploughing Champion, John Milnes from South Yorkshire.
Alongside the ploughing competitions, there will also be an extensive trade stand area, craft marquee and rural craft displays. Visitors also have the opportunity of seeing how farming has changed throughout the past century. They can see displays of horse drawn machinery, vintage tractors, including two 1915 machines, a 1915 Case 10-20 and an Overtime Model R,- and a wide variety of different makes of tractors from every decade through to the 1970s. They can also see giant steam ploughing engines made during World War I, which can all be compared to the latest ploughs and cultivation equipment in action, adding up to a farming spectacular second to none.
