FOOD BANK - The launch of the Knighton Food Bank (KFB) is on October 15 at Russell Cottage next door to Norton Street Baptist Chapel in Knighton. The bank will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9.30am till 11.30am. The food bank has been set up by Knighton and district churches and is thought to be the first in mid Wales and also one of the first in such a rural area.
KFB will be there to help people on a low income, those who have lost their job, had a break-up of a relationship, are sick, have a disability or are in receipt of a huge fuel bill.
Knighton Food Bank will provide bags of tinned and dried goods plus essential fresh items for those in difficult circumstances. The food bank works on a voucher system issued by a referring agency or professional, such as a doctor, social worker, health visitor, mental health or domestic violence support service. Individuals can also contact their local church minister for a voucher. All the food will be donated by members of the public and local shops have been asked to set aside an area where containers can be left with a note asking shoppers to kindly donate tinned and dried purchases. All items must have a long use by date and a list detailing essential foods required will be placed with the collection boxes.
If people need someone to talk to in confidence, trained KFB volunteers will be on hand. When you bring your voucher to the KFB point you can have a chat and a coffee and find out about services including benefits, housing, fuel and domestic violence. If anyone is in urgent need of food and has no transport, arrangements will be made to deliver food to them. The KFB welcomes donations to support the development of Knighton’s emergency food provision. The group are also looking for volunteers to help with the running of the food bank.
Knighton Food Bank is also setting up a winter crisis project. Winter is a particularly difficult time for many people on low incomes.
KFB would like to lease additional premises, where it can offer a drop-in centre and a play area to allow parents a chance to talk to volunteers in a quiet environment. In addition It plans to provide space at a reasonable rent for other services to offer help. Finally it would like to run its own charity shop area within the premises to generate funds.
