HEREFORD’S former Debenhams shop could soon be getting a new lease of life.
The 83,000 square-foot shop at Hereford’s Old Market shopping centre is marked as ‘under offer’ by the retail renting website Completely Retail.
It has been empty since May 12, when Debenhams closed its Hereford shop, after online fashion retailer Boohoo bought the brand for £55 million and relaunched the department store as an online-only operation.
Debenhams had been at the Old Market since the complex was opened in 2014. The shop itself was opened by Herefordshire Paralympic athlete, Sascha Kindred OBE.
Old Market was hit by closures in 2018 when the Prezzo and Chimichanga restaurants at the shopping centre closed in April 2018 as owner Prezzo shut down 94 restaurants nationally amid financial difficulties.
Both units remained empty until earlier this year. In June, the Korean eN BBQ opened at the former Chimichanga site, while buffet restaurant Amazing Asia opened earlier this month in the space left by Prezzo.
The Swarovski shop, one of the smallest units, closed in September 2018, reopened for a brief stint as a Yankee Candle, and closed again in 2019.
More recently, the closure Top Shop has also left a unit unoccupied at the complex unoccupied.
British Land, the owners of Old Market shopping centre, has been approached for comment.
