A FAMILY who run a popular fish and chip in Hereford are still there because of issues regarding its lease.

Barry and Lulu Young have been in charge of the College Green shop since 1986, but decided to call it a day just before Christmas due to its lease coming to an end.

However, after thinking they were saying a final goodbye to their customers, the new leaseholders can't take it on until all the paperwork has been sorted.

"There were amendments to the lease and it's taken a month for the council to sort it out," said Mrs Young.

"They've agreed them now though - what they were, I don't know.

"Where we thought we were at Christmas with finishing, it didn't happen because two more amendments came in.

"We've had to reopen again but it's what you have to do when you've got a business.

"We're hoping that it will be complete within the next seven days."

Mr Young initially worked at the former Black and White fish and chip, which was opposite the Kerry in the city centre.

Him and his wife then worked at other shops, before the College Green one became available.

"We've seen families come and go and have had good and happy times, as well as sad," added Mrs Young.

"In the 38 years, a lot of things have gone on, and we've been through it all.

"The lease is coming to an end now and physically we can't take it on for another 20 years - we'd be 90 odd. It's time to call it a day."
