THE jockey who rode the Herefordshire-trained Mon Mome to victory at this year’s Grand National has opened a new building for a Ledbury charity.

Liam Treadwell, who won on the 100-1 outsider, trained by Venetia Williams, opened new workshops and teaching units at Keeper’s Cottage in Falcon Lane on behalf of the Salter’s Hill charity.

The charity offers services for people with learning disabilities and has spent more than £200,000 converting the ground floor of a disused barn.

“It’s great to be here and see the work this charity is doing for people with learning disabilities,” said Mr Treadwell. “On seeing the new barn there is obviously a sense of achievement, which helps with the work that is done here.”

Peter Scott, chairman of the board of directors of Salter’s Hill charity, said: “It’s a great thrill for us all to have Liam along to open this new facility and to showcase our work.

“This is the first phase of our development to provide opportunities for people with learning disabilities to try new activities and develop new skills.”

Money has been raised over a two-year period from donations, fund-raising, grants and the charity’s own reserves. Salter’s Hill still has to raise the funds to convert the first floor of the barn, which could cost a further £100,000.

Other projects in the pipeline include provision for its domiciliary care agency, based at Gorsley, and providing transport to allow individuals living in rural areas to attend activities.
