A LEDBURY veteran is scaling new heights to beat a condition that’s threatened his family.

Arthur Wrench, aged 87, will abseil down Eastnor Castle next month to raise money for the Stroke Association.

The retired financial consultant, who fought in the Second World War, will make the leap with other volunteers on June 28.

Mr Wrench’s wife Mary has suffered mini-strokes for the last four years, while his father and eldest sister died from the condition.

“It’s a thing that’s very close to my heart, but strokes have not had enough publicity to date,” he said.

“I thought the challenge was something I could tackle despite my advanced age. I’ve always enjoyed a new challenge, and this is something I’ve never done before.”

Mr Wrench, of Bramley Close, tackled Ben Nevis for his 65th birthday.

He hoped to raise £300 from his daredevil antics, but has upped his target to £500 thanks to the generosity of friends and supporters.
