A FASCINATING article by Chris Plant entitled “County ready to recall sacrifice of Great War”
appeared in the Hereford Times (March 28) concerning the courageous exploits of men of the Hereford Regiment at Suvla Bay in Gallipoli.
They were heroic exploits in a failed campaign.
In the article, an unconnected detail caught my attention – the items listed as being on display at St James’s TA barracks include the pennant which belonged to the late former Fuhrer (for a very brief period) Admiral Doenitz, the strategist behind the Battle of the Atlantic in the Second World War.
How did this come to be in Hereford? Was it “liberated” by a Herefordshire soldier?
I would be interested to know and not of course because I or any of my clients lay legal claim to it.
