LTHOUGH I now live over the border, I was born and raised in Hereford, and as a youngster always enjoyed the unique atmosphere of a funfair sited in the city streets. So much so, that I always brought my own children to the May Fair, and now bring my grandchildren.
Strangely, although the fair has moved from streets such as Commercial Road (for obvious congestion reasons) it still has a compelling magic to my grandchildren and me. Perhaps, I never really grew up!
I can understand local stores complaining of inconvenience for trading due to the three day fair. But is this feeling generally felt by all traders in the city, or just a minority?
The Hereford Times has probably gauged the reactions of local people, but I have obviously missed any conclusions.
The week after leaving Hereford, part of the fair comes to Abergavenny. The rides are placed in a large car park near the town centre, yet the atmosphere never appears to be the same. If the May Fair moved to say Merton Meadow car park, or the racecourse, I wonder if the uniqueness of Hereford May Fair would be lost?
DEREK PARRY, Abergavenny.
