THERE has been so much bad press about football and its so-called supporters I have been very disappointed not to read something positive about this wonderful sport. The contrast between the game at Torquay on May 5 this year and that fateful day 10 years ago versus Brighton was incredible.
A row of riot-clothed police with batons and shields stood across the half-way line after the Brighton game - completely unnecessary as even grown men were crying at the Meadow End.
At Torquay, however, from my vantage point in the disabled area in the Home end I witnessed an amazing sight. Torquay fans went on to the pitch to congratulate their team and eventually wandered up to where our fans were in the away end. Trouble? No! Both sets of supporters applauded each other and, I am reliably told, were hugging each other it was a very moving and emotional time.
Both sets of supporters behaved with dignity and respect, but I have not been able to find one word about this in any reports. It seems only bad behaviour is newsworthy.
