I was interested to see the letters about litter in Hereford as I too have felt this friendly and attractive city is being blighted by litter which spoils it for residents and visitors alike. I know, from conversations with both friends and council officials responsible for the collection of litter, that the problem seems greater than the resources available to deal with it.

I also know (having been to a very clean city centre in Sheffield recently) that solutions can be found and, indeed, once you can turn the tables and stop people dropping litter and behaving in various anti-social ways in the town centre, that money can be saved for other essential services. It will not be an easy task, but we’ve stopped people smoking in pubs etc so why can’t we stop people dropping litter. With a creative and ‘can do’ approach of a multi-disciplinary nature (council, policy, shops and pubs for example, as well as other concerned officials and interested members of the public) surely Hereford could be put on the map as a clean city - with all the pending developments, now seems to be a good time to explore this action. Perhaps readers could send emails and letters to the Hereford Times with - most importantly of all - constructive ideas as a starting point with a view to getting a group of people together to explore ways forward.
