THE suggestion by an Independent councillor of closing Newmarket Street to all vehicles except public transport, to enable integration of new development with city centre, makes me glad the Independents do not have control of the council.
Closing Newmarket Street would cut off through traffic to and from Worcester and the east. The Skew Bridge on Roman Road would not be able to cope. There would be rat runs through all the estate roads to get access to the river crossing. Satellite navigation systems would all have to be re-programmed.
This suggestion was in one of the proposals for the on ESG development but without the road infra-structure in place, would be useless.
Forty years ago Hereford was laughed at as being the only city in the Common Market with the ring road passing through the centre. Get it right this time.
C Davies, Swainshill.
