I WAS delighted to see coverage of the recent decision by Herefordshire Council to grant the soft fruit grower EC Drummond and Son planning permission for the rotational use of polytunnels (Hereford Times, August 28, 2008, Polytunnel plan gets green light).
Although we recognise that polytunnels are not universally popular, they enable the production of high-quality British grown strawberries for consumers.
This dramatically reduces the reliance on importing strawberries from countries like Spain, supporting the local economy in the process.
The shelter they provide protects them from heavy rain, which has ruined other crops in recent weeks.
It is important to remember that the agricultural sector generates millions of pounds for the region and is one of the biggest industries in Herefordshire.
Unless it is supported, the economic vitality of the county will inevitably suffer.
This can be done by Herefordshire Council giving greater consideration to polytunnel planning applications. Herefordshire Council has a vital responsibility for supporting local business and rural jobs.
A positive approach to polytunnel planning applications will allow consumers to continue to enjoy fine, British-grown strawberries.
