Buying local is postcode lottery ANYONE travelling around the country on holiday this summer may have noticed that there is a huge discrepancy between the foods that supermarkets stock in different parts of the country.

The availability of good food, particularly British food and local and regional ranges, is a postcode lottery, with an abundance in some stores, but scarce or non-existent in others. The seventh British Food Fortnight (September 20 - October 5, 2008) sees the launch of a new ‘Want to buy British’ service that enables consumers to see, at the touch of a button, what British produce is available in the supermarkets - you can search by product or by supermarket, see which supermarket is selling the most British produce and create your own shopping list to make it easier to find British food next time you are in your local store.

Interestingly, most supermarkets stock comprehensive British ranges - you just have to be living in the right area to enjoy them.

May I suggest to fellow readers that they visit the service on britishfoodfortnight.co.uk, look at all the British products available and ask the manager of their local supermarket to stock those items that are currently unavailable in their store?
