CAN you possibly invite the appropriate cabinet member to explain to the residents of Herefordshire why wheelie bins are the best option for collecting recyclable materials?
Currently, the residents sort the recycling into various categories. The wheelie bin will contain an unsorted mix of recyclable materials.
Shredded paper will get inside glass, tin and plastic containers. Paper will get stained with the liquid residues (or water if washed) draining from the tins, glass and plastic bottles.
Shards from smashed bottles will also contaminate the paper and present a hazard if manual sorting is envisaged.
What arrangements have been made for residents in rural areas to get their wheelie bin to the point where the collection truck picks up?
I do not wish to sound cynical, but to me the whole exercise seems to have involved a sham consultation after the decision to change to wheelie bins had been taken.
It might prove to be yet another silly idea like the folly of ‘Rotherwas relief from the south only’ road, the blight currently affecting businesses in the ESG zone and the subsequent removal of these much-used centrally located businesses to the city outskirts (assuming their owners can afford the massive relocation costs).
