AS clerk to Breinton parish council, I have on several occasions been asked to write to complain to one department or another of Herefordshire Council.

Indeed, one complaint was aired last year in the Hereford Times, so I think it is only fair to write to congratulate all concerned about the parish freighter facility.

For those of you who are not aware of this, it is a service provided by Herefordshire Council at a subsidised rate to parish councils.

It comprises a refuse lorry and van, parked at a pre-arranged location for a two-hour slot, where parishioners may dispose of all unwanted household items (with a few exceptions).

Breinton used this facility for the first time on Saturday, April 23.

Having advertised the event for months in the parish magazine I was dreading a wet day, with nobody turning up and grumpy operatives. Not a bit of it.

The day was lovely and more than 50 families used the facility. Alan and Alex, who were the drivers of the lorry and van respectively, could not have been more helpful or patient.

Able members of the parish helped the less able with their loads of household waste and there was an air of conviviality and friendship.

I congratulate Councillor John Jarvis for fighting for the continuation of this service, which meant that more than 50 journeys were not made through the town, over the bridge and to the tip.

Breinton could not have made use of this service without the generosity of Wyevale Nurseries, which lent its site for a valuable and much-appreciated two hours.

If the site is available in the future, I am sure Breinton Parish Council will be putting in its bid for more sessions.

Thank you, Herefordshire Council for seeing the sense of this service and for funding it again for another year.
