HAY-on-Wye’s golf course looks set to close after the owners revealed plans to return the site to farmland.
Martin Thomas, captain of Summerhill Golf Club, has confirmed that the course is likely to close in March 2014.
Mr Thomas said course owners Elizabeth Haycox and Paul Greatbatch – who bought the nine-hole course, club house and associated house back in 2010 – have told him and other members of the committee of their intention to shut the site in order to return the Summer Hill site to farmland.
The closure of the course puts the future of the associated club at risk, but Martin believes there is still time to save them both.
He said: “The golf club members, as well as many in the community who regularly use the facility for social events, hope that there is still time for a change in heart from Elizabeth and Paul.
“There is a surplus of farmland in the Hay area but only one golf course and its closure would be a another massive loss to those who enjoy sport in Hay-on- Wye.”
The club has just under 200 members aged from five to 85.
