Few English counties have as strong ties to the land as Herefordshire. So the outpouring of feeling in the county this past week over the government's perceived assault on farms' long-term viability has not been surprising.
It now falls to the government to explain what its vision is, if it has one, for British farming, and how it proposes bringing that about.
That said, there the post-Brexit move away from production or landowning subsidies to supporting for more environmentally sensitive approaches is already well in train. And it has been encouraging to take in not one but two well-attended local events recently at which local farmers have set out ways of farming both sustainably and profitably.
Till next time,

A Herefordshire farmer who is behind one of today's rallies in London has appeared on Sky News. Martin Williams, a third-generation farmer from Herefordshire is one of four organisers of an ongoing event that will see hundreds, if not thousands join the peaceful demonstration to challenge the government's decision to increase inheritance tax on agricultural land.
