A CRICKETER who played alongside Glamorgan duo Mark Wallace and Simon Jones will be bowling at a set of stumps for 24 hours.

Lyndon Jones, who lives in Hayon- Wye, has been wearing hats and gloves as he trains for his 24-hour bowl-a-thon, at St Richard’s School.

The former Glamorgan Seconds and Wales Minor Counties allrounder wants people to join him for sponsored 30-ball stints.

The 36-year-old will be raising money for St Richard's School's Hirons Hall appeal and the delivery suite at The Alexandra Hospital in Redditch.

“It’s not a world record attempt, and I will be taking breaks, but I will be trying to keep going for 24 hours,” said Lyndon, who is now the head of ICT at the Bredenbury Court-based school and also teaches PE and geography.

“The sports facilities at the school badly need upgrading and, three years ago, my wife and I lost twin babies.

“It was a hard time but the Alexandra Hospital and the staff were fantastic.

“I thought it would be a great chance to support both causes.”

Lyndon, who grew up in South Wales, is enjoying a break from club cricket having played for Malpas, Gowerton, Bromsgrove and captaining Barnt Green in the Birmingham and District League.

The off-spinner was in the same Wales youth and Glamorgan Under-19 teams as Mike Powell and played against big names including Andrew Strauss, Marcus Trescothick and Matthew Hoggard.

Lyndon, a married father-of-one, has worked in the computer software industry and produced the animation for a resource for cricket coaches.

The indoor bowl-a-thon takes place at St Richard's School on Friday, May 17, from 1pm. It will run until 1pm the following day.

Lyndon said: “There are a lot of 30-ball sponsored slots available on the day for people to have a bowl and prizes will be given to those who manage to hit the stumps more times than me.

“I’d really like to get parents and children involved.

“Prizes will also be offered to the person who correctly guesses the total number of times I hit the stumps over the 24 hours.”
