A FORMER Hereford United star and a promising young athlete are joining forces on a bicycle made for two to raise funds for the Bulls on Saturday.
Gareth Davies and Tasha Webster will be among more than 40 Bulls fans riding the 65 miles to Telford for United’s final game of the season.
The cyclists have been busy raising money for Hereford United’s Community Trust department, to help with their disability work within the community, as well as for Hereford United.
The current total stands at around £3,000 with a target of £5,000.
“I enjoy cycling and so I signed up to do it on my own,” said Tasha.
“But then Gareth asked me about joining forces on a tandem and so I signed up to that idea. Hopefully we should be able to raise a bit more money that way.”
The pair had their first practice run last Saturday prior to the match against Gateshead.
“We cycled from Hay to Edgar Street and that took about an hour-and-a-half to cover 22 miles so it was not too bad,” said Tasha.
“I’ve done quite a lot of training on my normal bike and did around 160 miles last week but this was the first effort on a tandem.
“It’s like being married - I was the driver and there was someone in the back seat saying ‘mind the potholes’,” joked Gareth.
“I did the walk from Malvern and was asked if I would do this as well - Hereford United gave me my career and I am happy to do anything I can do to put something back .
“I want my boys to play for Hereford United one day if they are good enough - if the club is not here then they will not have that opportunity.
“It’s important that we all do things to try to help and if everyone can do a little bit, above and beyond, it will help to sustain the club for many years to come.”
Community Trust Manager Jamie Edwards said: “Following relegation, the Trust lost more than £60,000 of funding received from the Football League, this included £20,000 specifically for the club’s Disability Programme.
“Our Disability Programme delivers weekly sessions in partnership with the RNC to children and young adults. “Two blind footballers represented Team GB in last summer’s Paralympics and we also run one of only 12 Down’s syndrome football groups across the country.”
The cyclists will be departing from Edgar Street from 9am on Saturday.
