SHROPSHIRE and Herefordshire finished in a creditable third place when the prestigious Four Counties Junior Tournament came to the county for the first time.
The event was inaugurated in 1973 and this year’s hosts, Herefordshire Golf Club, were delighted to have been selected as the venue.
“It is a great honour for our club to be chosen to host this event in the Shropshire and Herefordshire centenary year,” said Herefordshire GC club captain Ken Baker.
Teams from Cheshire, Lancashire, Nottinghamshire and, Shropshire and Herefordshire played a round-robin matchplay competition over two days.
The hosts made an excellent start with a 4-3 win over Lancashire and also beat Nottinghamshire 4-3 before being defeated by a strong Cheshire side 5½-1½.
Lancashire were the eventual winners with Cheshire runners-up and Nottinghamshire in fourth place.
“I was delighted with our team performance,” said Shropshire and Herefordshire’s charirman of junior golf Charles Sievewright.
