OMBERSLEY batsman Liam Gwynne starred on his MCCA Trophy debut in Herefordshire’s seven-wicket success over Cheshire.

The opener slammed an unbeaten 79 as the county side notched their first success over Cheshire in either Championship or Trophy, since their Lord’s final win in 2001.

Skipper Dave Exall invited Cheshire to bat first after winning the toss and was soon proved correct as Dan Conway (4-28) and Callum Stewart (1-28) reduced the visitors to 47-6.

A small revival lifted the Cheshire total to 147 with another debutant, Mike O’Shea (2-25), colleting the wickest of top scorers Kirwin (38) and Duffy (33).

Herefordshire’s reply was given a great start by Gwynne and Brockhampton’s Ben Stebbings (24) who posted 65 before they were parted.

O’Shea (15) and Brad Wadlan (six) stayed around to assist Gwynne, who hit 13 forus and a six in his 99-ball innings, before skipper Exall came in to hit the winning boundary.

Herefordshire now head for Jesmond to take on Northumberland in their second group match on May 5.
