ENGLAND talisman Jonny Wilkinson is a ‘dead-cert’ for Warren Gatland’s British and Irish Lions’ tour party to Australia.

That’s the view from Luctonians’ head coach Andy Williams, the former Newport Gwent Dragons, Bath, Ospreys, and Worcester Warriors man.

Williams says Alun Wyn Jones would be a good choice as skipper.

He says winger Christian Wade is a player making strong claims for inclusion in the Lions’ party, which is announced on Tuesday.

“I think Jonnny Wilkinson is a dead-cert for the Test side,” said scrum-half Williams, who won five caps for Wales.

“I think there’s no better warm up than playing in a French Cup final and he’s by far the best 10 in the British Isles.

“I don’t know what his weakness is - I don’t think he’s got one.

“He’s an exceptional talent and, to win a Test series, you need a guy like that.”

Williams thinks Wyn Jones deserves the Lions’ captaincy.

“He deserves it and is guaranteed his place.

“Alun is a good rugby player and a good guy and he would be more than capable and a great choice to lead the Lions.”

Williams believes winger Wade, Ireland’s Craig Gilroy and Scotland full-back Stuart Hogg are also strong candidates for the Lions’ tour.

“I think Wade from Wasps has been outstanding and he would be a tough one to overlook,” added Williams.

The Lions’ first Test against Australia is on June 22; the second on June 29 with the third on July 6.

Williams added: “Adam Jones, Justin Tipuric, Mike Phillips and Leigh Halfpenny, could also be there in the Lions squad alongside George North.”
