EWYAS Harold joint-manager Dave Whitson thinks his team have come up a little bit short in their quest for the Herefordshire League Premier Division title.
“Unfortunately, I don’t think that will be enough to win it,” said Harold boss Dave Whitson, after the 1-1 draw with Westfields Reserves.
Despite being eight points clear of Wellington Rangers, he isn’t sure that Harold will hold on to top spot.
“Wellington are a strong team and they have several games in hand. It’s down to them now,” said Whitson.
“I’ll be praying for Fownhope and Pegasus and I’ll be going to the matches, so I’ll be wearing my Fownhope and Pegasus shirts!”
If Harold win the league, Whitson admitted: “We’ll definitely be having a few beers. He added: “If we don’t win, I’ll look back at the Fownhope matches because they have taken five points off us.”
Losing just three of their 18 games this season, Harold’s success has been down to a number of factors.
“Our players have gelled and a couple of key players rejoined mid-season,” said Whitson.
“It’s been hard work but with the backroom staff, club’s directors and reserve team manager, we all have a common goal and want to try and win something.”
If Harold win the title, they would be in contention for a move into the West Midlands League but there would have to be changes according to their managers.
“I don’t know whether promotion is a viable option mainly due to the facilities and location,” said manger Whitson.
“Football-wise we could make the step up but we would have to strengthen with three or four more players.
“The main concern will be our facilities – the pitch isn’t bad but I don’t think the facilities meet the guidelines,” added Whitson.
Joint-manager Rob Calderhead added: “We would need a fully committed squad to compete in the league above and the facilities are the thing that will hold the club back unfortunately.
“There are plans and grants coming in and hopefully they will improve the facilities in the next couple of years,” said Calderhead.
