MOST pupils escape their teachers for the weekend after the Friday afternoon bell, but Aylestone High School’s Tom Bendall, doesn’t have that luxury.
When he meets up with his Westfields Reserves team on a Saturday, he has to play alongside his PE teacher, Nick Moores.
The 15-year-old admitted: “It’s a bit weird and when I joined the Reserves, I wasn’t expecting to play with my teacher.
“He doesn’t tell me off at the weekend but there is a lot of banter and both of us get a lot of stick from the players for him being my teacher. “They’re always telling him to give me a detention.”
Teacher Nick admitted: “There is a bit of banter at school on a Monday morning. “We both give each other stick.
“At the start of the season Tom would always rate me out of 10 and my colleagues would ask him: “How did Sir get on at the weekend?”
Despite the lighter side to things, young Tom added: “I quite enjoy playing in the same team as him because at school I can talk to him about the game. “I’d say that he helps me with my football being my teacher.”
Moores, 36, added: “It’s good experience for him to play men’s football and we can see it when he plays school football.
“He needs to stay in the game and keep playing because he could go up a level. “There is no reason why he can’t get into the Westfields first team or to a higher level.”
“I’ve been playing a bit recently and my target is to get into the first team,” said Bendall, who came on for 25 minutes against Ewyas Harold.
“It would be nice to follow in the footsteps of people like Craig Jones and play for Hereford,” added the young Westfields winger.
Asked who was the better of the pupil and teacher, Bendall said: “It’s got to be me!”
His teacher agreed. “He is more effective than me but I’ve got 20 years on him!”
