WESTFIELDS chairman John Morgan has revealed the inspiration behind the club’s success - a knitted chick.

His wife, Ann, made the lucky charm during a bad spell last December when Westfields were in mid-table obscurity.

However, Westfields then went 28 games unbeaten to clinch the runners-up spot in the Midland Alliance for the second year in succession.

“We had a meeting at the club after we had just lost to Gornal and I noticed we had 13 members,” recalled John, who played for Westfields in 1972.

“I have sat on a few committees and was worried because we had 13, which is an unlucky number.

“My wife was knitting the chicks to raise money for charity and I asked her to knit me one for Westfields so I could put it in the cabinet.

“We have had a bit of banter about it - and the chick became our 14th committee member.

“We won our next game so I’ve kept it at the club ever since,” added John, who has been chairman for around seven years.

Ann, who makes the cakes and serves the tea at home matches, has sold around 150 of her creations to raise money for Acorns Children’s Hospice.

The club are now holding their breath over their application for promotion to the Southern League.

“We would love to play at the next level so so I hope our luck doesn’t run out,” said John, who stopped playing football at the age of 26.

“It would be the fresh challenge that we all need but I won’t be counting my chickens just yet.”
