GOLFER Wyn Owen has hit top gear to qualify for an Audi Quattro Cup UK Regional Final tournament this summer.

Owen, from Wellington, carded 39 points to win the South Hereford Audi Invitational stableford at The Herefordshire.

The top finishers from the event will now pair up in a regional final at the St Pierre Golf Club in Chepstow on August 1.

The UK final takes place at Bowood Golf and Country Club near Calne, Wiltshire, in September.

The cup is the world’s largest amateur golf competition with almost 80,000 players competing for a place in the week-long world final.

Newcomer Drew Davis has made a big towards reaching the knockout stage of Ross-on-Wye club’s men’s club championship.

The former Naunton Downs ace shot a gross 75 to become the day’s top gross score performer in the Spring Scratch Medal and Handicap.

Davis was closely followed by the 2012 finalists, James Morgan, and current club champion Harry Butler, who both achieved a gross 76.

The duo were followed by Andrew Stephens, with gross 77, Steve Price, gross 78, C Stanbridge and Jason Bolton, who both scored a gross 80.

Around 130 players turned out for the event, which is one of the three competitions that determines the top 16 golfers.

In the event’s nett category, Craig Newman finished top of the final score-sheet.

The 22 handicapper has been in good form, playing a key role in the team which won the captain’s drive-in event and a high finishing 38 points in the Burns Trophy.

Doug David, who also accompanied Craig in the captain’s drive-in success, produced a gross 82, nett 67 score to be the day’s runner-up.

Allen Bartlett and Paul Ford each shot a nett 68, while there were also fine showings from Tim Kefalas (69), Andrew Hobbs and Michael Gardner, both scored 70.

Simon Davies, Stephen Forrest, Mike Talty and David Dockray all carded a nett 71.

Other results: Ross Seniors’ Layton Cup stableford: 1 Richard Escolme 42 point, =2 David Thrower and Robin Taylor 41 points.

Seniors’ skipper Mike Harris led his squad to their fifth victory in a row with a 5.5 points to 2.5 away success over the Stinchcombe Hill course near Dursley.

Terry Jarrett’s club team scored an outstanding 3.5 points to 2.5 win at the Kington Golf Club.

The Ross points came through wins by Danny Gear/Richard Kimp 2 up, James Morgan/Doug David 4/3 and Colin Bennion/ Kevin D’Lonra 2 up.
