Westfields 6 Aston Villa Old Stars 1 WESTFIELDS ended their 40th anniversary year with an entertaining encounter which also produced a sizeable contribution to the Liver Unit at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
Former club strikers Gary Stevens and Alex Sykes led the Westfields attack and it was Sykes who put the hosts ahead with a 20-yard drive in the 12th minute.
Former skipper Matt Phillips extended the lead shortly afterwards and current captain Mark Hibbard added the third.
Villa pulled one back before the interval when Phil King, who scored the winner for the Midlanders when they beat Inter Milan in the 1994-5 EUFA Cup, beat goalkeeper Jon Pugh with a tremendous shot from the edge of the area.
After the interval, Colin Gibson and Brendan Ormsby went close to further reducing arrears before Hibbard hit the target again.
Pat Heard and Neil Rioch worked hard in the Villa defence but were unable to prevent ex-Westfields boss Mick Panniers from making it 5-1 with an expert finish.
Darren Bradley and David Norton set up further chances for Gibson but these went begging and it was Westfields who rounded off the scoring with a second goal from Phillips.
"It was a lovely day and helped the Villa Old Stars celebrate the 25th anniversary of their European Cup success while ending our 40th anniversary on a nice note," said Westfields chief executive Andy Morris.
