REIGNING Flint & Cook Marches League Division 1 champions Goodrich scraped their first win of the season with an exciting four-run home success against fancied Burghill & Tillington.
Batting first after losing the toss, Goodrich quickly slipped to 4-2 before recovering thanks to some steady scoring in the middle order from skipper Andrew Brown (38), Philip Evans (25) and Andy Russell (14).
But the Burghill attack continued to plug away and there were wickets for Mike Pledge (3-9), Kingsley Morris (2-22), Aaron Treagus (2-27), Alex Hedges (1-35) and Matthew Biggs (1-35) as the home side were all out for 147.
Mark Preece and Kingsley Morris were dismissed quickly in the Burghill reply but with New Zealander Hedges at the crease, the visitors were always in with a chance.
Only Biggs (17) and skipper Neil Box (10) were able to offer much support, however, and eventually the Kiwi ran out of partners on 68 not out as Goodrich sneaked home.
Kington 3rd notched their second success in as many outings when they cruised to a 102-run victory at Bartestree & Lugwardine.
The visitors' innings received a solid start as Wayne Morgan (56) and Stuart Mundy (80) both compiled half-centuries.
The experienced trio of Jim Lewis (33), Edward Price (21 not out) and David Morgan (16) all chipped in with useful contributions and, although Dean Smith (6-57) and Scott Tippins (3-37) bowled well for the home side, Kington reached an impressive 252-9 from their 45 overs.
Bartestree struggled to keep up with the pace in their reply despite some good batting from Ben Simpkin (53) and Matt Aubrey (31) and the Kington attack, spearheaded by Wayne Morgan (3-43) and David Gwynne (3-46), restricted them to 150-9 in reply.
It is Builth Wells, who were promoted alongside Kington last season, who lead the way at the top of the table after a crushing eight-wicket success at Crickhowell.
Only Nick Francis (28) was able to make a score of any note as Maritz Booysen (2-36) and Jeff Carter (3-12) proved too much for the Crickhowell top order.
Veteran Rob Wall wrapped up the innings with a hat-trick to finish with 4-27 as the home side were dismissed for 110.
Winston Williams (40 not out) and Tim Richards (39 not out) then guided the early-season pacemakers home after Francis (2-26) had picked up a couple of early wickets for the home side.
The other two matches in the division between Talgarth and Leominster and Llandrindod Wells and Garnons fell victim to the weather.
