IF you pick up your camera instead of picking your flowers this summer, you could be in with a chance of winning a major new photography competition launched by Hereford Cathedral Perpetual Trust in conjunction with the Festival of Flowers.

"While the flower festival will give us a stunning celebration of flower arranging, we wanted to challenge people to look at the plants around them in their everyday life," says Glyn Morgan, secretary of Hereford Cathedral Perpetual Trust and one of the organisers of the festival.

Entries are invited in four age groups, rising from seven-year-olds to adult classes on the theme of "a celebration of flowers".

The winning pictures will be displayed at the Festival of Flowers, held in the cathedral from Thursday, September 6, to Saturday, September 8, with winners invited to the gala reception on Wednesday, September 5.

Prizes have been sponsored by Hereford-based camera shop, Melgray, and Olympus cameras.

Full details of the competition and festival can be obtained by calling 01432 374261; from Melgray in Widemarsh Street, or by visiting www.herefordcathedral.org/flowers
