ASSISTANT secretary Brian James' hard work for Westfields was rewarded when he was presented with the clubman of the year award at the club's annual dinner and presentation evening.

James was one of a number of awards announced at the event at the Three Counties Hotel which was attended by more than 100 players, officials and guests.

Newcomer Jamie Cuss marked his first season with the club by picking up the player of the year award and the players' player of the year award while Mark Davis' 21 goals earned him the golden boot prize.

Ashley Day, who spent a period on trial with Premiership side Blackburn Rovers, was named as the club's young player of the year award.

The awards for the club's Midland Alliance side were made by manager Sean Edwards while, in the absence of Hereford Times Herefordshire League Premier Division side manager Chris Ferriday who was on holiday, the awards for that team were announced by Ian Morris.

Rod Haslam was chosen as the team's player of the year while the leading goalscorer was Mark Mortlock.

And a moment of humour was injected into the proceedings when the contribution of the club's three Polish players was recognised when Lucasz Jobda was named Westfields' first ever Overseas player of the year.

The evening's principal speaker, club chief executive Andy Morris reflected on a season dominated by the three Fs', fire, flood and fines.

The pitch was flooded for the first time in the four years that Westfields have been at allpay.park while a fire, which destroyed the club's stand just a couple of days before their biggest game of the season against Hereford United, was a serious blow.

"The fire was devastating and affected the whole club," said Morris. "Many people work hard behind the scenes at Westfields but this was a cruel act and left us all with a low period."

The good news was that work had already started on replacing the stand and the new structure should be ready for the start of the season.

As for the third F', fines, Morris said that he hoped that players would improve on their lack of discipline which had seen several players suspended for vital games.

The awards were presented by principal club sponsor Tony Killeen of allpay and Hereford Times sports writer Richard Prime who, in proposing the toast to Westfields, congratulated the club on firmly establishing themselves in the Midland Alliance. He said that he hoped there would be another good season to come.
