HEREFORDSHIRE may make a couple of changes when they travel to Finchampstead to take on Unicorns Championship Western Division leaders Berkshire in their fourth three-day game of the season on Sunday.
The inexperienced county line-up collapsed dramatically on the second afternoon against Dorset at Colwall in their previous game, sliding from 71-1 to 89-8 before going on to suffer a six-wicket defeat.
Berkshire look set to provide an even sterner test. They have won two of their three championship games and secured a place in the final of the knockout trophy on Sunday with a 49-run win over Staffordshire, who beat Herefordshire group stages.
Herefordshire have named a squad of 14 for the game and this includes Nick Hammond and Will Fraine, who both represented the county side last season, while there is a first call-up for former Bromyard and Brockhampton opener Ryan Tongue, who has been in fine form for Barnards Green this season.
"It was felt that, after the second innings collapse against Dorset and against one of the stronger sides in the Minor Counties, more experienced specialist batting was necessary," said Herefordshire's chairman of selectors Ian Macklin.
Seamer Dan Conway has another target in his sights after becoming the fourth player to complete 50 games for Herefordshire in the match against Dorset.
The schoolmaster needs just four victims to move to third overall for wickets taken for the county in championship matches. Kevin Cooper (221), Paul Humphries (102) and Mike Bailey (81) are the current top three, ahead of Conway with 78.
Skipper Matt Pardoe needs 268 to complete 1,000 championship runs while Pete Burgoyne, who continued his good form with 44 for his club side Denby on Saturday, needs 366 for the same landmark.
Herefordshire: Matt Pardoe (C), Ian Bullock (wk), Peter Burgoyne, Dan Conway, Benny Ellis, Will Fraine, Nick Hammond, Jamie Harrison, Jamie McIlroy, Barney Morgan, Taylor Pugh, Jack Taylor, Ryan Tongue.
