A HEREFORD boxer has been crowned National Champion after getting up from the canvas following a first round knockdown and fighting his way back into the tie.
South Wye Police Boxing Academy star Yusuf Abdallah had to win the Northern area boxing title to qualify for the amateur national final in the 69 kilogrammes category.
The 23-year-old, faced an unbeaten opponent and was knocked down in the first round. However, he came back into the tie and won the next two rounds resulting in a points decision.
"The lad he fought has never been beaten so we are over the moon with his victory," said coach Vince McNally.
"His opponent was a very strong kid and when the bell went he came out on his front foot and clipped Yusuf knocking him off balance and he went down.
"Yusuf got back up and used his footwork to hit his opponent at angles leading to him winning the second and third rounds to win the fight.
"It was a very emotional day and we are delighted to have our first National Champion."
Also fighting for the Hinton club for National Champion crown in the women's category was Midlands Champion Shay Jarrett.
She face a much taller opponent who took a points decision.
