A YOUNG swimmer from Hereford continues to make waves in the pool after taking two golds and a silver medal at the English Summer Nationals.
Ledbury & District swimmer Oliver Jones came away with the medals following a tremendous first full season back in the pool.
Jones' season blossomed in January at the Worcester County Championships held over two weekends where, from 16 swims, Oliver came away with seven golds and eight silver medals as well as three Junior County Champion titles in the 50-metre and 100m Breaststroke and 400m Individual Medley (IM) events.
The 14-year-old from Belmont then moved on to the West Midlands Regional Competition held in Coventry in May, winning an impressive five gold and two silver medals from his nine swims, making him one of the most successful competitors overall in his age group.
Next on the calendar was the Worcester County Relay Championships held in Wolverhampton where he and his Ledbury teammates won a clutch of medals.
In July Jones was selected to represent Worcestershire at the Three Counties meet comprising Gloucestershire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire, where he won his individual events and Worcestershire finished the competition in first place.
Thanks to his performances in the long course pool at regional qualifiers earlier in the season he comfortably qualified for three events at the British Summer Championships held in Glasgow. Qualifying in all three Breaststroke events he raised his game further, finishing fourth in the 100m distance in a time of 1:10.29, seventh in his 50m race (32.42) and 11th in the 200m event (2:35.18).
Jones then moved on to the English Summer Nationals in Sheffield, finishing second in the 400 IM in a time of four minutes and 54.48 seconds. He then capped off his season with two fabulous first places in 200 IM (2:17.31) and the 200m Butterfly (2:18.46).
Training has now resumed after a short break and Jones is already looking forward to the new competitive season ahead, kicking off with the National Inter-Counties event being held in Sheffield in October where he has been selected to represent Worcestershire for a second successive year.
Ledbury club chairman Steve Watson said: "Everyone connected with the club are very proud of Oliver's achievements this year and Oliver himself wishes to thank everyone for their support and wishes to mention The Beryl and John Trust (Hereford)."
