HEREFORD FC have added central defender Matt Preston to their squad as they continue their pre-season preparations.

The 29-year-old defender spent last season with Kidderminster Harriers and played 18 times before being released in the off-season.

Previously he has Football League experience with Walsall, Swindon Town and Mansfield Town.

He joins Kyle Howkins and Mark Derricott as the recognised central defender.

“Matt is a player who has experience at the level and above,” said Bulls boss Paul Caddis to the club’s website.

“He is someone I am really pleased to get into the building and to fight off the competition for his signature is a big coup for us.

“He will fit into the group we are building perfectly and with the attributes he brings to the team defensively makes me really pleased Matty has decided to join us.”

Preston made his Hereford debut in their 3-1 victory against West Brom under-21s on Saturday – coming on for the final 23 minutes.

“We didn’t want to over-do it,” said Caddis. “Preston came in Thursday which was the first night that we’d seen him at training.

“You can see he’s in good shape and looked after himself. But you can’t replicate a match in training with people.

“You can do one-to-one sessions and stuff like that. I’m really pleased to get him into the club. I thought when he came on he used his voice and his experience. Positionally he’s always in the right area and one that we’ll build up minutes.

“We’ve got no worries or issues with Matt Preston for sure.”
