HEREFORD and County Athletes have achieved notable results in both the South Wales and the Shropshire Fell Series, as well as in the Welsh Fell Running Championships.

On July 6, Fred Tyler, Milo Williams, Harrison Salkeld and Saffi Reid raced on Pen y Fan (the highest point in South Wales) and in very tough, wet and cold conditions the youngsters faced steep gradients, low cloud and poor visibility as they climbed.

In their respective age categories, Tyler, Williams and Reid finished first and Salkeld finished second in his first fell race.

It was a fantastic achievement in such a challenging sport that requires sheer strength and resilience.

Reid and Tyler are currently top of their age categories in the South Wales Fell Series with just three races to go.

On June 29, the Welsh Fell Championships took place in Abergynolwyn, North Wales.

Tyler finished second in his age category and Reid secured fourth in her first season fell running.

The Championship event was extremely technical with huge fells. The youngsters had to tackle slippery wet slate underfoot and navigate through dense, tall bracken, whilst competing against experienced junior fell runners from Northern clubs that specialise in the sport.

In the Shropshire Fell Series, Reid finished first in her age category after taking on the Stiperstones fell race on July 10. She currently sits second in the Shropshire Fell Series with two races to go.

The Herefordshire and Borders Summer Cross Country league continued with the third round of the series recently.

Sam Juson and Gareth Leek completed a one-two for Croft Ambrey RC in the men’s event and Eric Apperley (Builth and District RC) finished third.

In the women’s event Hannah Fletcher and Lucy Austin also completed a one-two for Croft Ambrey RC and Laura Hands (Hereford Couriers RC) was third.
