VETERAN striker Adam Rooney scored the winner to send Hereford through in the FA Cup following a 1-0 victory in their FA Cup replay against Ilkeston Town.

Following a 1-1 draw in the first game at Edgar Street on Saturday the sides had to play another 90 minutes on the artificial surface of Ilkeston three days later.

An injury-hit Hereford side were forced to give 36-year-old assistant manager Rooney his first competitive start of the season.

Despite being a league below the Bulls the Robins had shown some dangerous signs in the first game.

On their home surface Ilkeston started on the front foot and both Jamie Walker and Tom Curson had efforts blocked inside the opening 15 minutes.

Hereford goalkeeper Aaron Chapman was then forced into a diving save as an Ilkeston corner fell for Tom Marshall whose effort was matched.

Colin Daniel then took aim at the visitors goal on 37 minutes which flew narrowly over the crossbar.

However, with their first real chance Paul Caddis’ side took a 40th minute lead with a quick counter-attack through Tate Campbell.

Fellow striker Ahkeem Rose played his part before the ball fell to strike partner Rooney who lashed his effort home.

The second half was a game of few chances until the final minutes when L’varn Brandy’s effort was blocked into the path of Daniel whose effort was tipped over by Chapman.

The victory means that Hereford will now head to Bishop's Stortford in the FA Cup third qualifying round on Saturday, September 28. First they welcome Kings Lynn Town to Edgar Street this Saturday.
