Westfields 1 Alvechurch 1 aet (Westfields lose 3-2 on penalties) WESTFIELDS suffered a penalty-shoot defeat in the final of the Worcester Royal Infirmary Cup at St George’s Lane.

The Hereford club lost 3-2 on penalties after the match had ended 1-1 after extra-time.

Westfields forced the final into extra-time when an Alvechurch defender headed an own goal in the 90th minute.

Westfields dominated the game for long periods over 90 minutes but failed to convert their chances.

Lee Critton put Alvechurch ahead in the 35th minute after Westfields had failed to clear a corner.

Westfields missed a glut of chances due to poor finishing, although Jamie Cuss was unfortunate when he struck the bar with a 20-yard drive.

Mark Davis was quick to follow-up Cuss’ effort but he failed to hit the target.

Westfields goalkeeper Jon Pugh produced a brilliant save after the break to keep the Hereford club in the match.

Westfields drew level in the 90th minute when Alvechurch defender Sam Brookes headed Pugh’s deep free-kick into his own net.

Striker Tom Harding brought a fine save from the Alvechurch goalkeeper in the early stages of extra-time before they had a strong penalty claim turned down.

In the shoot-out, Mark Hibbard and Paul Allam converted penalties but misses by Shaun Prince, Terry Green and Davis proved costly for Westfields.
