HEREFORD had a prom-ising start to the 2008 regatta season with five wins at Evesham.

On day one, on a shortened course due to the additional river height of the Avon, Jamie Coombes stormed to victory in the Men's Junior 18 Single Sculls beating Monmouth Comprehensive, Llandaff and then another Llandaff sculler in the final.

He then teamed up with Sean Blake to win the Men's Junior 18 Double Sculls, again beating a Llandaff crew in the final.

The Women's Senior 4 Coxed Four were unlucky, losing to Pengwern in a hard-fought final.

On day two’s scheduled sprint regatta, the first win of the day came from the Women's Senior 2 Coxed Four of Veronica Preedy, Clare Fenton, Alex Look, Helen Phillips and Robin Morris (cox), beating Stourport by 3/4 length.

The Men's Veteran C Coxed Four continued their winning streak again beating Stourport. The crew of Rod Phillips, Keith Lawrence, Richard Bissell and Phil Hart were coxed by Jake Morris who collected his first winners prize.

The final win of the weekend came from Charlotte Stewart and Katie Tatchell in the Women's Junior 18 Double Sculls. They made hard work of their victory by dead-heating in the final with opponents Llandaff. In the re-row, the Hereford double won with a one-length win.

Three crews from the city club competed at Shrewsbury Regatta. The Saturday racing was held over a 1000m downstream stretch of the the River Severn as it meanders through the town.

The first victory of the day came from Charlie Stewart and Kate Tatchell in their Junior 18 double scull who beat off a crew from Runcorn with a verdict of ‘easily’ in their semi-final. The girls won their final against Monmouth, again with an ‘easily’ verdict.

The coxed four of Rod Phillips, Keith Lawrence, Richard Bissell and Phil Hart, coxed by Charlie Stewart, continued their undefeated run by winning the veteran C event.

They beat off crews from Ramsey RC, Northampton RC and Stourport Boat Club in the final.

The Senior Two Coxless Pair event saw Mike Gardener and Nigel Birch get through two rounds of racing only to be narrowly beaten in the final.
