LEAGUE newcomers Llandrindod Wells scored an excellent nine-shot win against Kington when the reigning Tarmac League champions made their first league visit to the Mid-Wales club’s green.
The home club scored their second win of the league season, picking up rinks points on three rinks.
The three Llandrindod rinks all won by just single figure margins, led by B Harrison’s rink with a nine-shot advantage, but Kington picked up a good win on the rink skipped by Brinley Powell with a 10-shot win to prevent a clean sweep by the Welsh club.
St Martin’s eased their way into second place in the league with a 15-shot home win against Hay on Wye.
The visitors are enduring a difficult start to the season, having yet to record a win in the league.
Only the Hay rink skipped by D Walker, that got home by two shots, prevented maximum points going to St Martin’s.
The home club were, however, made to work for their win by Hay as the best winning result for St Martin’s was an eight-shot win for Pat Ellis’s rink which was supported by six-shot and three-shot wins for a three-rink victory and 14 league points.
With three wins out of three matches, St Martin’s remain the only unbeaten club in the league.
With games in hand on the league leaders, Kington, they seem well placed to maintain a strong challenge in this year’s championship.
Castle Green picked up their first win of the season when they entertained Kingsland and finished the day with a 33-shot win. But the home club were made to share rink honours as both clubs won on two rinks with the decisive result coming on the rink skipped by Castle Green’s Jean Jones.
At the half-way stage, they were leading 12-7 but, in the final 10 ends, they scored 22 shots to Kingsland’s two to romp away to a 34-9 win. With an additional 11-shot advantage from the second Castle Green winning rink, Kingsland’s two wins from their rinks fell well short of the scores needed to match the home club.
The other league matches fell victim to the heavy weekend rain and will need to be rearranged and played later in the year.
RESULTS: Llandrindod Wells 74 Kington 65 (Home Rinks W3 D0 L1), St Martin’s 77 Hay on Wye 62 (W3 D0 L1), Castle Green 94 Kingsland 66 (W2 D0 L2).
