BURGHILL Valley won the team championships in the Shropshire and Herefordshire Union of Golf Clubs’ County Competition at Mile End.

The winning Burghill team was captained by Gary Bradbury and also consisted of Jonathan Young, Andy Passman and Ed Morley.

Burghill finished with 115 points and won the 18-hole combined stableford by eight shots.

It is the fifth time that Burghill have won the team championships after victories in 1996, 2003, 2004 and 2005.

The Shropshire and Herefordshire Union of Golf Clubs’ Seniors opened their campaign with an impressive 14-4 win over Lancashire at St Anne’s Old Links GC.

The county were delighted to avenge last season’s two defeats to Lancashire, one of the strongest senior teams in the country.

The morning greensomes proved that match would be tough with each side recording two wins, two losses and two halves.

However, Shropshire and Herefordshire shone in the afternoon fourballs and stamped their authority on the match with five wins and one-half.

Captain Gerald Smith said: “I am so proud of the manner in which all the team performed, particularly the new recruits, Garry Huggett and Stuart Lee, who were unbeaten. Ivor Cooper secured top spot in Burghill Valley Seniors’ Charity Stableford competition in aid of prostate cancer research.

Cooper’s winning tally was 38 points, while Mike Buffey was second with 37 points and Chris Furber was third with 33 points.

Cec Morgan won Herefordshire Seniors’ Stableford competition with 40 points, while Donald Kilgour pipped Roger Wardle for second spot after both players carded 38 points.

Herefordshire Seniors followed a 4-4 home draw against The Worcestershire with a 5-2 victory over visiting Cradoc.

Junior Joe Lemarr carried off the club’s Centenary Cup with a magnificent nett 61.

Another junior player, Alex Allen, was the runner-up with a nett 64 and beat third-placed Paul Storrer on a countback.

However, Storrer’s gross of 70 won him the Best gross of the day.

Dave Bufton won the Collins Flag and Medal event for the second time at Ross-on-Wye GC.

He headed a list of 83 competitors in the popular competition at the South Herefordshire club.

He first won the event in 2001.

The highlight of Bufton’s round was an inspirational finish in which he dropped only two shots to par on the back-nine holes, including a 25-ft putt on the 17th hole.

Bufton’s nett 68 medal score (78-10) pipped the nett 69 from Charles Houlbrooke (78-9) who had to settle for the runners-up spot.

Teenager Nick Ellis achieved a nett 70 (75-5) to finish with the best gross score of the day.

Ross C brought back Geoff Baker and John Church-Jones for the trip to South Herefordshire C which they lost by 5.5 points to 0.5 points.

Ross skipper Dave Edwards and Chris Harvey suffered their first defeat in two years of partnering each other in matches.

Ross Seniors lost their 12-match unbeaten run when they crashed to a 4 points to 3 defeat at Droitwich Spa Seniors.

Gwynne Morgan triumphed in the Three Counties Golf Society’s third outing of the season, at Llanymynech, near Oswestry.

Morgan won the event with 35 points and beat Ben Lloyd on a countback over the last six holes.

Nigel Winney took the prize for the longest drive. Chris Cole was nearest the pin and also won the morning nine-hole competition with 21 points.

Leominster’s Jim Kelly and Nick Palmer achieved first place in Kington’s Men’s Invitation event.

Kelly and Palmer carded with 46 points to finish ahead of Llandrindod Wells duo Ray Evans and Phil Evans, who fired 44 points.

Three pairs finished on 43 in a scramble for third place which, after a countback, went to Llandrindod duo Tracy Sanford and Richard Gealy.

Kington’s John Hoyle won the longest drive for the over-55, while Darren Richard picked up the prize for the under-55.

Nearest-the-pin honours were won by Richard Gealy (hole 3), John Priday (hole 5), Peter Whatcott (hole 9), Rob Pritchard (hole 12), Colin Mansell (hole 15), Chris Gale (hole 18).

Leominster achieved a 4-2 home win over Ludlow in a handicap league match with strong displays from junior players, Dan Davies and Ben Clarke.

Cradoc Seniors’ A team emulated the performance of their B team to reach the last 16 of the South Wales Seniors Classic Cup.

They reached the last 16 with a 3-0 home win over Lampeter-based Cilgwyn B.

Cradoc’s teams will be hoping to avoid each other in their quest for quarter-final places.

Cradoc Seniors were beaten 4-2 by Kington Seniors.

Jeff Davies won Cradoc Men’s Extra Stableford with an excellent 43-point haul.

Ryan Williams was second with 41 points, while Tony Evans was third with 40 points.

Chris Alford won the club’s latest Midweek Medal after firing 74-12-62.

Terry Neil (88-22-66) was second, while Ian Gwilym (86-19-67) secured third spot.

Shaun Chambers won Hereford Municipal’s Birmingham Children’s Hospital Haemophilia Unit event at the Racecourse.

Chambers triumphed with 40 points, pipping co-organiser Dean Samuel with 38 points.

Colin Morgan picked up the men’s Longest Drive prize and took third place in the event with 34 points.

The Pee Wee Trophy was won by Kieran Chambers, while Phil Green achieved the only two of the day.

Kelly and Dean Samuel organised the competition which raised more than £1,000 for the hospital.

A total of 89 entries from 11 clubs competed in the seniors open at Summerhill GC.

The presentations were carried out by Summerhill senior club captain, John McArthur.

The results were: 52-61 age group: 1 Roger Jones (Rhosgoch) 42 points, 2 Les Amos (West Mon) 42 points, 3 Gareth Mario-Williams (West Mon) 37 points; 62-68 age group: 1 Stan Arnold (Kington) 44 points, 2 Ben Bowkett (Ludlow) 43 points, 3 Nigel Keylock (Summerhill) 42 points; 69-81 age group: 1 G Sharrard (Ludlow) 36 points, 2 Dave Halley (Kington) 36 points, 3 Isa Lloyd (Rhosgoch) 36 points.

Herefordshire sports charity Ready Steady Win is staging their annual golf day at Ross-on-Wye GC on Monday, June 16.

The winning team will be presented with the Peter Bunker Memorial Golf Day Trophy.

Ready Steady Win has given financial support to Herefordshire’s talented sports people since 1994.

The format for the competition is teams of four with the best three stableford scores on each hole to count.
