PAUL Preedy carried off the top honour at a men’s open competition in Belmont Golf Club’s 25th anniversary week.

The event was a successful one for the home players, with the top three finishers all coming from the Belmont club.

Preedy finished top with 39 points, while Harvey Hancock was second with 38 points, and James Tutty was third with 37 points.

Belmont’s Greg Morgan achieved the best gross with 72, with Brandon Bowen nearest the pin and Michael Owens registering the longest drive.

Lilley Brook’s C Davies and A Huckfield fired 46 points to win an anniversary Am-Am Betterball pairs.

Belmont’s M Ingram and A Morgan were the runners-up with 44 points, while Leominster’s T Guest and P Sandell were third, also with 44 points.

John Dallow and Paul Stevens, with 45 points, were the winners of the anniversary tournament Betterball pairs.

Colin Tolley and Des Davies finished second on a countback from Paul Preedy and Tristan Dodd after both pairs carded 44 points.

Kevin Smith clinched the Captain’s Bell after a return of 39 points. Jim Harvey was second with 38 points, while Barry Parkin was third with 37 points.

Leominster’s Phil Lawrenson was the runner-up in the inaugural regional qualifying competition for the English Golf Captains in Shropshire and Herefordshire.

Lawrenson used his knowledge of the Leominster course to finish with a 34-point return.

Mark Drayton’s David Barlass won the event with 36 points, while Leominster’s Ken Watson was third with 32 points.

Alan Jones from Worfield carded 18 points to triumph on the front nine, while Leominster’s Pete Morris was the leader on the back nine with 18 points.

Market Drayton’s Paul Robertson hit the longest drive, with Church Stretton’s Chris Graham finishing nearest the pin.

Kaz Rudnicki fired 84-15-69 to carry off the Leominster Seniors’ Bircher Bowl. Bill Harris (88-17-71) was the runner-up in the Bircher Bowl, which is for players with a 0-18 handicap.

Ian Hamilton (94-19-75) won the Tedd Trophy for players with a 19-28 handicap. Paul Blight took second spot with 98-20-78.

Ted Amos clinched top spot on a countback in the 0-12 section of the June Medal at Leominster.

Amos pipped Rob Arrowsmith to pole position, with Jack Morris taking third place.

Dan Davies triumphed in the 13-18 section from second-placed Wayne Barton, with Roger Barrington finishing third.

Norman Greener took the honours in the 19-28 section from Mike Barrington, second, and Tony Walmsley, third.

Nigel Yarwood claimed the Captain’s Trophy at the Herefordshire Seniors’ away day at Alice Springs Golf Club.

Yarwood picked up the honour from captain Jeff Burkin after completing the best round of the day with 34 stableford points.

Derek Powell, with 33 points, won the 0-16 handicap section from Kevin Bayliss and Dave Hankins who both carded 32 points.

David Halpern took the plaudits in the 17-28 section with 33 points, while Dennis Brown was second (32 points) and Peter Bingham third (31 points).

Roy Allen won the prize for the longest drive, while Chris Harrison was nearest the pin and Roger Wardle had the best combined score on the six par-three holes.

John Lewis carded 33 points to win the May Club Stableford at Brockington Hall.

David Lloyd was second with 30 points and third-place went to Peter Boughey, 29 points.

Ron Plant achieved first place in the Seniors’ Stableford with 35 points.

Boughey was the runner-up with 30 points, while Lloyd took third spot with 29 points.

The Shropshire and Herefordshire Union of Golf Clubs’ (SHUGC) County Seniors suffered a 10-8 defeat to Staffordshire at Lilleshall Hall.

The county trailed 7-5 after the morning fourballs and drew 3-3 in the afternoon greensomes.

Averil Magee will join the male qualifiers from Hereford Municipal at the regional finals of the National Volkswagen Masters in September.

She booked her place at Royal Porthcawl after winning the Division 3 section with 33 points.

Ray Bull returned a comprehensive 41 points for his round and was the overall winner of the club’s qualifier. Shaun Cham-bers, who won Division 1, and Shaun Vivian, the Division 2 winner, also join Bull and Magee at the regional finals.

Terry Robinson finished 13th overall but had a five-pointer gross eagle, nett Albatross on the ninth when his approach shot from 168 yards went into the hole.

The Hereford Municipal Men’s team suffered a 5-1 defeat at Worfield in the SHUGC Handicap League. Malcolm Keddie and Rob Pugh secured the Municipal’s only success.
