KINGTON GC held their June medal with the top prize going to Nigel Venables (79-18-61), who finished four shots ahead of the rest of the field.

He will now go forward to represent the club in the Leonard Cheshire Charity Cup competition, which is to be held at Woodhall Spa GC.

Nigel Lifely saw off a field of more than 100 members to lift Ross-on-Wye Golf Club’s annual Traders Cup.

The 18-handicapper produced a gross score of 86 to book his place at the club’s presentation evening in September.

It has also been a successful week for fellow Ross member John Palmer, who won the Ross Seniors Keene Cup. The 11-handicapper produced a 39 point stableford score to win by a clear two points and repeat his success of 2006.

The Herefordshire club’s fine form continued as they progressed to the last 16 of the County Seniors Scratch Foursomes Cup after defeating holders Lilley Brook.

Wins for Patrick Gamble and Doug Duncanson, and Brian Macnamara and Malcolm Sosna secured the 2-1 victory.

But Ross B team were not as successful when they travelled to the West Midlands to take on Enville Golf Club.

The side’s first score did not arrive until the final fourball when team captain Terry Jarrett, and Richard Kirk achieved a halved match to put Ross on the scoresheet. They ended up losing by 5½ to ½.

Ross C team also suffered a rare defeat on home soil, losing to Worcester Golf and Country Club 3½ points to 2½.

Elsewhere, Ross Seniors came back from Monmouth with victory over their Welsh counterparts.

Cradoc Golf Club’s annual Members and Guests Day has been won by Mike Hudman and his guest with a score of 61.

Gareth Powell and guest were second on 63, with four pairs tied on 64. The competition attracted 68 pairs.

The club’s latest Midweek Medal was won by David James (81-15-66). Tim Nelson (76-8-68) was second.

Meanwhile, Cradoc Seniors went down two matches to five at Belmont in a friendly. One brief highlight was captain Colin Rosser who, alongside Geoff Wooltorton, won two-up.

Leominster Golf Club’s invitation day has been won by two juniors.

Ben Clark and partner Alex Allan, who play at Herefordshire Golf Club, topped the leaderboard with 45 points.

Nick Palmer and Darren Richards from Ludlow came second with 43 points.

The over-50s longest drive competition went to Dave Ruff of Ross Golf Club, while the under-50s’ equivalent was won by Darren Richards.

The invitation day came in the middle of a rich vein of form for Leominster who have recently beaten Shropshire’s Patshull Park and Ludlow. The club is also going well in the Junior Handicap League.

Almost £5,000 has been raised for two county charities following a tournament at Herefordshire Golf Club.

Organised by the Hereford City Rotary Club, more than 150 amateur golfers teed off throughout the day. The money raised will now go to The Children at Number 1 charity, and Bods.

The Children at Number 1 charity is based on Ledbury Road and provides respite care for severely disabled children. Bods run activity programs for children at risk of exclusion.

Herefordshire and Shropshire’s County Seniors travelled to Warwickshire for their latest fixture and found themselves with only one half to their credit in the opening three matches of the morning greensomes.

But wins by the final three pairs gave the county a 3½ to 2½ lead at lunch.

The afternoon fourballs again began badly before wins by the pairings of Gerald Smith and Alan Molyneux (6&5), Cliff Mawby and Ken Mallender (3&2) and Mike Walker and Dave Humphreys (one-up) saw Shropshire and Herefordshire to an overall 10½ to 7½ victory.

The seniors at Kington Golf Club have taken part in a three-man team event.

First place went to Keith Douglas, Paul McMillen and Richard Williams with 91 points.

But the side has also suffered recent defeats at Builth Wells (5 to 3) and at Worfield by 6 to1.

Seven pupils from Kingstone High School have taken on Minster College in a challenge match at Leominster.

The talented Minster side recorded a 6-1 victory, but the match proved valuable practice for Kingstone’s Year 11 pupils, who are due to take part in the Herefordshire Schools Golf Championship later this month.
