REIGNING champions Woofferton lost their 100 per cent record in the Premier Division of the Hereford Times Herefordshire League when they were held 1-1 at home by Wellington Reserves.

Despite going ahead in the first half, Woofferton were not at their best, but nothing can be taken away from Wellington who produced a gutsy second half performance that was rewarded with a late equaliser.

Stuart Millichamp and Gareth Jones had both missed good chances before Jamie Marsh saved his keeper with a goal-line clearance when Kit Williams had his shot partially saved. Midway through the half Gary Mowen lifted the ball over the defence to set Nathan Hodges up for the opening goal.

Wellington had the better of the second half but struggled to create clear-cut chances. The home side were hanging on, but were left to rue a missed chance by Danny Gower, when Williams knocked in the equaliser after Cooper was only able to parry Steve Brotherwood’s original shot.

Westfields caused the upset of the day with a 5-1 win at Ewyas Harold.

The game was well-contested with plenty of goal-mouth action, but the visitors gave the Harold a lesson in taking chances.

Derek Craddock, for the city side, and Matt Smalley plus Tom Herbert had all gone close before Paul Burton latched on to an Adrian Powell through ball to give Westfields the lead. John Ferneyhough met a Tommy Taylor free kick to level the score.

Lee Ferneyhough pulled the ball back for Phil Glover to restore the Westfields lead, and then the same player netted his second from a Craddock corner to open up a crucial two-goal gap.

The second half was another ding-dong battle. Joe Taylor struck the woodwork from the penalty spot for the home side, but Carl Morgan featured in two late goals to make the game safe. He crossed a corner for Sean Davis to glance in the fourth and then ran on to a Kevin Jinks through-ball to score himself.

Sutton United opened up a two-point gap at the top of the table when they recorded a 5-3 win at Amberley Park against new boys Ross Town.

The city clash between Hinton and Lads Club at Broomy Hill deservedly finished all-square at 2-2 after an entertaining open encounter with chances at both ends.

Hinton had the better of the first and third quarters, twice taking the lead, but a hard-working Lads Club side came back strongly in the latter stages of both halves to deservedly share the spoils.

Paul Monteath capitalised on a strong start for the home side by opening the scoring midway through the first half. He raced on to a through-ball from Richard Legdon to beat Steve Bell.

The visitors equalised on 35 minutes when Matt Williams picked up a stray pass from the home defence and, after good work between Josh Pugh and Ryan Dawe, Mike Olive tucked the ball past Kai Bond.

Jody Dawe took a long ball and rounded Bell to put Hinton back in front on the hour, but then with just minutes to go Bond was only able to block Ritchie Maturi’s fierce shot and Keith Jones was on hand to tie the score. Dave Olive thought he had equalised minutes earlier, his shot struck the crossbar and came down, but the officials deemed it not to have crossed the line.

Missed chances and a late lapse of concentration cost Leominster Town dearly as they went down 2-1 at home to Bromyard Town Reserves.

Leominster worked hard in defence to hold a useful travelling outfit in the first period, and had the added bonus of scoring the only goal of the half against the odds. Paul Jones netted with a fine individual goal five minutes before the break.

Bromyard looked robust in midfield after the restart and equalised early on. With time running out and Leominster’s first point of the season beckoning, Bromyard broke away to score the winner, and chalk up their first points.

Another side to break their duck was Fownhope who registered a narrow 1-0 home win over Ledbury Town Reserves.

They started well and dominated the first quarter. Steve Winmill scored the crucial goal midway through the half. He received the ball on the edge of the box and blasted it first time into the top corner of the net.

The other game between Pegasus Reserves and Kington Town at Old School Lane ended in a 3-0 win to Pegasus, but will be remembered as much for the home keeper breaking a leg and the subsequent hour-long delay.

Kington were doing quite nicely in the early stages, and had already bore down on Dave Spencer’s goal three times before the accident.

Midway through the half Spencer came out once again and tangled with Kington’s James Williams. He was penalised for a foul, but the visitors had to wait for an hour to take the spot-kick as Spencer needed treatment.

Chris Jones scuffed his spot kick wide and within minutes the home side took the lead.

Pegasus added two further goals to complete the scoring midway through the second-half.
