AFTER their weekly golf competition, admiring cohorts arranged a presentation to Herefordshire Golf Club’s oldest member, Frank Meigh, who recently celebrated his 87th birthday.

Despite reaching this milestone, Frank still manages to get up to Ravens Causeway to play two rounds of golf every week, weather permitting.

Frank is very much an institution at the club and the award was not only in recognition of his durability on the course but also out of deference to the courage he and others like him displayed in the Second World War.

Frank is probably the last surviving Radio Operations/gunner of 172 Squadron Chivenor who flew Wellington bombers on U-boat hunting operations in the Bay of Biscay.

An erstwhile rear gunner, Frank left the squadron with the rank of Warrant Officer, and his playing partners were keen to pay a little tribute to their highly esteemed and distinguished colleague.

A bottle of scotch will be suitable fortification for rounds (of golf) undertaken in less clement weather conditions.
