HEREFORD United will be looking for a long overdue success when they entertain Walsall in a League 1 clash at Edgar Street on Saturday.
The Bulls’ last league win over their Midland rivals was way back in November 1977 when United collected a 3-2 victory with goals from Billy Holmes, Steve Emery and Julian Marshall.
Since then, seven fixtures at Edgar Street have produced two goalless draws and five wins for the Saddlers.
During that period, United have, however, managed two cup successes, a 1-0 win in the Autoglass Trophy in 1993-4 and a celebrated 2-1 FA Cup third-round win in 1989-90 when Mel Pejic’s injury-time winner earned the Bulls a home clash with Manchester United.
Hereford, who are now three points adrift at the foot of the League 1 table, could certainly do with the points to prevent them from losing track with the teams above them.
Hereford will be expecting Andy Williams to recover from an ankle injury to resume a place in attack after missing the last two matches.
Home fans will also be anticipating their first look at Bruno N’Gotty, the experienced France international centre-back, who joined the Bulls on loan for a month from Leicester City prior to last Saturday’s defeat at Leeds.
The 37-year-old showed plenty of class at Elland Road as befits a player with such a distinguished pedigree.
N’Gotty began his career with Lyon and made stops at Paris St Germain, Olympique Marseille, AC Milan before moving into the Premiership with Bolton Wanderers.
He made around 150 appearances for the Reebok Stadium club before moving on to Birmingham City and then to Leicester, where he was a regular choice last season.
He made six appearances for France and picked up a European Cup Winners Cup winners’ medal when he scored the only goal as Paris St Germain beat Rapid Vienna in the 1995-6 final.
Next Tuesday, United will host Swindon Town in the second round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Edgar Street, kick-off 7.45pm.
